X-Men ’97 standout character Sunspot is getting some love from Diamond Select Toys, and Screen Rant has a first look at the collectible. Played in X-Men ’97 by Gui Agustini, Sunspot is the superhero moniker of a young mutant named Roberto Da Costa who has the ability to absorb and channel solar power. The collectible is the latest in a line of Diamond Select Toys pieces based on X-Men: The Animated Series, though it of course jumps to the 2024 revival and continuation of that show.
Screen Rant is happy to offer a first look at Diamond Select Toys’ Sunspot collectible. Based on the X-Men ’97 take on the character rather than the comic book Sunspot, the mini-bust shows the character fully powered, with jet-black skin and bursting with bold yellow balls of energy. This Collectible Proves It’s A Good Time To Be A Sunspot Fan Close This Diamond Select Toys Sunspot collectible proves something of a resurgence for the character that began with X-Men ’97. Gui Agustini’s take on Sunspot brought the character into the world of X-Men: The Animated Series for the first time, as the character had never appeared in the original run of the show. Though Sunspot was present in other X-Men projects, notably the animated X-Men: Evolution and The New Mutants film, this collectible helps make a case that X-Men ’97 is the character’s highest-profile non-comic appearance yet.
Even in the comic world, Sunspot has been less celebrated than the best-known X-Men—Sunspot’s cancelled Marvel book is a prime example. The character has had very little merchandise thus far, and the Diamond Select Toys collectible is the first piece of X-Men ’97-related Sunspot merchandise. Sunspot fans will likely appreciate the quality and aesthetic of the mini bust, which was designed by Barry Bradfield and sculpted by Michelle Riley.
This Diamond Select Toys collectible comes as X-Men ’97 season 2 promises to greatly expand the world of the animated series. Thankfully, Sunspot survived the events of the first season and will presumably play an important role when the show returns.
