Wonder Woman Vs Captain America: Which Superhero Has The Stronger Shield?
Both Wonder Woman and Captain America famously use shields in the DC Extended Universe and Marvel Cinematic Universe, respectively, but which superhero has the stronger shield? Since his debut, Captain America has always used a shield as his primary offensive and defensive weapon, along with his legendary hand-to-hand combat skills. Wonder Woman originally relied on a combination of fisticuffs and her enhanced lasso, but after the post-Crisis era, she began using Amazonian magic-enhanced swords and shields as well.
In the MCU, Captain America’s primary shield is made of vibranium, an exceptionally strong Wakandan material that absorbs kinetic energy. The exact material and origin of Wonder Woman’s shields are not explored in the DCEU, but it is reasonable to assume that they are far stronger than any ordinary shields and are further augmented by Amazonian magic. Wonder Woman uses one shield design in 2017’s Wonder Woman and another in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but how do they compare to Captain America’s MCU shield?
The Feats Of Captain America & Wonder Woman's Shields Close Throughout its many MCU appearances, Captain America’s shield withstands constant barrages of ballistic and energy weapon fire. The shield immediately proved its effectiveness in World War II, with Captain America using it to deflect or absorb energy blasts from Tesseract-enhanced Hydra weapons. The shield would go on to protect Captain America from the energy bursts of Loki’s staff, Repulsor rays, and even a direct blow from Mjolnir itself. Considering that the Tesseract is an Infinity Stone and Mjolnir is made of the otherworldly Uru, withstanding these strikes requires astounding durability.
In Marvel’s mainstream comic universe, Captain America’s shield is made of a vibranium adamantium alloy.
Wonder Woman’s first DCEU shield was used against conventional World War I weaponry, which is not nearly as impressive as the feats of Captain America’s shield. Wonder Woman’s second shield, however, was used extensively during her battle with Doomsday in Dawn of Justice, withstanding physical strikes and beams of heat vision from the Kryptonian monstrosity. Considering the sheer power of Doomsday, these feats could be considered more impressive than those of Captain America’s shield. Wonder Woman would also use her second shield against Steppenwolf’s forces in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, deflecting energy blasts from Apokoliptian weapons.
Do Captain America & Wonder Woman's Shields Have The Same Weakness? Close Captain America’s shield, despite its many feats, is not invincible, with Thanos’s double-bladed sword managing to shatter it with repeated strikes. Neither of Wonder Woman’s shields was destroyed in the DCEU, but her first sword – the God Killer – was disintegrated by Ares, which might imply that he could similarly destroy her shields. If Thanos’s sword is made of Uru, as many viewers believe, then all three shields might share a similar weakness: magic. While it may be difficult to determine if Captain America’s shield is stronger than Wonder Woman’s shields, they appear to have similar vulnerabilities.
