Deadpool & Wolverine"s Disney+ Release Creates New Confusion About The MCU"s Official Timeline

Marvel Studios has added Deadpool & Wolverine into the official MCU timeline on Disney+, but this has created new confusion, as its position doesn"t actually make sense. Deadpool & Wolverine premiered on July 26, 2024, and hit Disney+ on November 12, officially bringing Ryan Reynolds" Deadpool and Hugh Jackman"s Wolverine into the MCU. Although Deadpool & Wolverine is set mostly on Earth-10005 and in the Void at the End of Time, it fits within the MCU"s official timeline, but its placement has been a point of contention.
Only one scene in Deadpool & Wolverine actually took place in the MCU"s primary continuity of Earth-616. This saw Wade Wilson approach Jon Favreau"s Happy Hogan in 2018, in the months before Avengers: Infinity War, with hopes of being recruited into the Avengers team. When Happy refuses to recruit Deadpool, the Merc with a Mouth returns to his home reality and retires from his superhero career, which is where Deadpool & Wolverine picks up six years later, which would set Phase 5"s Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.
Deadpool & Wolverine Is Between The Marvels & Agatha All Along In Disney+'s MCU’s Timeline Deadpool & Wolverine Also Released Between The Marvels & Agatha All Along Close In Marvel Studios" official MCU timeline on Disney+, Deadpool & Wolverine has been implanted in between 2023"s The Marvels and 2024"s Agatha All Along series. This makes some sense, as the Phase 5 movie released between The Marvels and Agatha All Along, while 2024"s Echo series was placed earlier in the timeline, between Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. While Deadpool & Wolverine"s placement in the MCU"s timeline makes some sense when concerning the release schedule, this isn"t actually where the movie should have been placed.

Deadpool & Wolverine is set primarily in 2024, six years after Wade Wilson"s Avengers audition in 2018. This means that the Phase 5 movie has been put in the wrong place in the MCU"s official timeline. The Marvels takes place after the events of Ms. Marvel and Secret Invasion in 2026, and Agatha All Along takes place three years after the 2023-set events of WandaVision, also placing it in 2026. This means that Deadpool & Wolverine should have either been set in 2026, or been moved to a much earlier position in the MCU"s timeline.

It could be argued that the flow of time is different in Earth-10005, the designation of 20th Century Fox"s former X-Men universe, meaning six years may have passed for Deadpool while eight years passed for the characters of the Sacred Timeline. This seems unlikely, however, and still ignores the events of Loki season 2, the ending of which references the 2025-set Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Of course, the Time Variance Authority exists outside of time and space, but Deadpool & Wolverine"s place in the timeline has still caused confusion.

It seems as though Deadpool & Wolverine is insisting on being set in 2024, rather than adjusting its own timeline to better fit the overarching narrative of the MCU. The movie could have easily added a couple of years onto Wade Wilson"s career as a car salesman, creating an eight-year gap between his 2018 Avengers audition and the events of Deadpool & Wolverine, which would set the movie firmly in 2026. However, it seems the movie should have in fact been placed much earlier in the MCU"s timeline.
Avengers: Endgame was set primarily in 2023, meaning most of the projects in the Multiverse Saga have taken place in 2024 onwards.
Since Deadpool & Wolverine is set in 2024, the movie should have been placed at around the same time as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye. This confuses its connection to the ending of Loki season 2, as well as the events of Logan, which takes place in 2029 on Earth-10005. It"s fairly likely Marvel Studios will simply avoid answering this question, though it"s possible an updated MCU timeline book could confirm the timeline placement of Deadpool & Wolverine in the future.
