Sony Sets Up Miles Morales Joining The MCU ...And It’s Already A Problem

Sony set up Miles Morales to join live-action Marvel movies through a recently released Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse scene, but it already creates a problem. This June sees Miles return for another multiversal adventure in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's sprawling story. While in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Miles was visited by different Spider-Men in his reality, this time, the young Spider-Man will be traveling throughout the wide Spider-Verse, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's trailers giving a taste of the many different universes that will be present in the animated movie.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's cast includes the return of the original's main trio, with Shameik Moore back as Miles, MCU's Hawkeye Kate Bishop actress Hailee Steinfeld returning to voice Gwen Stacy — Spider-Gwen — and Jake Johnson coming back as Peter B. Parker, Miles' Spider-Man mentor who is now the father of the young Mayday. Oscar Isaac also returns as Spider-Man 2099 from the original film's post-credits scene. The returning stars are joined by many new characters, which include the villain known as the Spot, played by Jason Schwartzman. The Spot is the villain of the next two Spider-Verse movies, and he appears to help Sony set up Miles for the MCU.
Sony Confirms Miles Morales Is Part Of The Multiverse With Venom Crossover A Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse live-action scene was revealed in a new trailer. The scene sees the Spot use his powers to open up portals to different dimensions to visit a live-action reality. However, he does not find his way to any random live-action reality but rather appears in Tom Hardy's Venom universe. The Spot opens up a portal right in the middle of Mrs. Chen's convenience store from the Venom movies. The Spot goes on to announce to Mrs. Chen that he is robbing her store "because [he] is a bad guy," to which she looks rather unimpressed.
By having the Spot use his interdimensional travel powers to go from the animated Spider-Verse to the live-action universe of the Venom franchise — Sony's Spider-Man Universe — the studio is setting up Miles to join the MCU in a way. Sony's move confirms that Miles is part of the wider multiverse that connects the live-action universes, as Hardy's Eddie Brock managed to travel to the MCU, going back to the SSU during Spider-Man: No Way Home's post-credits scene. This makes it possible for the animated Miles to join the MCU at some point.
Sony Retcons Marvel Studios' Live-Action-Animation MCU Multiverse Rules Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featured Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange in a sequence where the character traveled through many different universes. Included in the scene was an animated universe. Both Doctor Strange and the young America Chavez transition from live-action to animation as they go through this new universe in the film before going back to their usual live-action form the moment they cross over to another universe. Sony retconned the live-action-animation MCU multiverse rules with the recently released scene from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
In the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer, when the Spot travels to Venom's universe, the character is not seen in live-action alongside Mrs. Chen, instead continuing to appear in his animated form from the Spider-Verse film. That decision does make sense for the movie it takes place in, as it would more likely than not be distracting to the overall story of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse if the Spot and any other characters from the movie would be switching from animated to live-action. For instance, something as big as Miles' first live-action appearance would completely overtake the animated film's story. Still, Sony retcons the MCU's rules in the movie.
There's An Easy Fix for Sony's MCU Multiverse Retcon There is a chance that the scene between the Spot and Venom's Mrs. Chen does not make its way into the movie, being used only in a trailer to promote Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It's not uncommon for movies to include scenes in the trailers that end up either being cut from the finished film or only having been intended to be used for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's promotional push. Superhero films are notorious for doing this, so it is very possible that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is simply using Venom's Mrs. Chen to draw in fans of the Hardy-led franchise.
