What is SABER? MCU"s New Space Organization & Differences To SWORD Explained

The Marvels’ trailer reveals a first look at the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel and teases a new space organization in the MCU. While The Marvels is technically Captain Marvel 2, the movie will see Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan teaming up in what seems to be a quite unique MCU sequel. In addition to the three “Marvel” superheroes, The Marvels' trailer also sees the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, who had a significant role in the first Captain Marvel.
Captain Marvel established that Nick Fury had been preparing himself and Earth for an alien invasion since way before Thor arrived on-planet. Despite retconning The Avengers, Captain Marvel added a lot to Nick Fury’s MCU story, and it set up the introduction of SWORD, which was teased for the first time in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Now, The Marvels reveals a new MCU space organization with which Nick Fury and Monica Rambeau are somewhat involved, SABER.
Nick Fury And Monica Rambeau Are On A SABER Base In The Marvels The Marvels' trailer features both Nick Fury and Monica Rambeau on a SABER spaceship developing some sort of research outside of Earth. Previously, Monica Rambeau had appeared in WandaVision working with SWORD, and there was no established connection between her and Fury. It's important to notice that there is no organization known as SABER in Marvel Comics. In other words, The Marvels’ SABER appears to be an original concept created for the movie. It is curious, though, to have a new space organization shortly after SWORD was teased in Far From Home’s post-credits scene and returned in WandaVision. What the SABER acronym means remains to be seen.
SABER May Be Replacing SWORD In The MCU In Marvel Comics, SWORD is responsible for protecting Earth from everything that comes from outside of the planet - that is, extraterrestrial and interdimensional threats. Whereas SHIELD is designed to protect Earth from itself, SWORD works as a first line of defense against unknown threats from outer space who often come to Earth looking for a fight. The Marvels’ SABER has at least one space station, and its agents are exploring an anomaly outside of Earth, which should be SWORD’s job. SABER may be replacing SWORD in the MCU, at least for The Marvels. In fact, The Marvels may be retconning Far From Home's post-credits scene.
While it was never stated where Nick Fury was during Far From Home, it was always assumed that the movie's post-credits scene featuring Fury on a space station was introducing the MCU's version of SWORD. It was only natural that Nick Fury, who was director of SHIELD for years, would now be involved with protecting Earth from intergalactic threats. However, SWORD's actual introduction in WandaVision had no ties to what Fury was doing in Far From Home. It seems that SWORD didn't debut in Far From Home after all and that Fury had been working with SABER instead.
SWORD Was Previously Established In The MCU Inspired by the early days of Marvel Comics' Ultimate Universe, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was built on SHIELD, which served as the common thread running through the MCU Phase 1 movies leading up to Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative. SHIELD continued to set the tone for the MCU until Phase 2 revealed that HYDRA had infiltrated the organization during its inception, leading to the dismantling of SHIELD by the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Though Nick Fury never stopped assisting the Avengers, it was only in Far From Home’s post-credits scene that the former SHIELD director was back at officially commanding an organization.
